News from the Area

The Cambridge group for the first time in a long time met at the Great Shelford Memorial Hall in the afternoon. This enabled members to attend and go home in daylight.

In total just over 20 members turned out and it was good to see everyone. Just for a change from going out visiting we had a speaker, our old friend Rosemary Wheeler. Rosemary entertained us with a talk which described all around that quaint and interesting village of Lavenham in Suffolk.

Rosemary’s knowledge of Lavenham was considerable since she had the advantage of being brought up in the village helping in the family businesses. As so often happens on occasions like this it brought back many memories with explanations to those who had previously visited Lavenham.

Our afternoon finished with light refreshments and some conversation, which seemed to centre around what we could do with some of our funds to help those less fortunate, and a generous raffle.

On the 26th September Chris and I together with Keith and Janet Jackson were invited by the Halton Group (Widnes) to their 20th Anniversary celebration. This turned out to be a really enjoyable evening. It was held in a very nice Social Club. We were greeted with a drink and the evening took off with friendly chatter and music and dancing, and a splendid buffet. They really know how to enjoy themselves. A fantastic evening.

Our next venture will be at the beginning of the Christmas season on the 2nd December when we hope to see many of you at 3pm at the Ancient Shepherds in Fen Ditton for a Christmas tea. The cost will be £6.50.

We are also hoping to meet in the New Year on the 13th January 2015 for a New Year’s lunch. This is to be held again at the Ancient Shepherd in Fen Ditton at 12.15pm for lunch at 12.45pm.

For both these meals please contact either Douglas and Barbara Mottram on 01223 263017 or on email or myself at 01223 860329 or email: for further details.
