News from the Area

Here we are again, time for a catch-up on the activities of Halton Zipper Club. In fact, not a lot has happened since the last journal, just our normal Thursday meetings with our usual line dancing, exercise classes and games. However on the 26th September we all got the chance to let our hair down and enjoy ourselves. It was the occasion of our club’s twentieth birthday and we had a party in the War Memorial Club in Runcorn, and a grand night it was too.Everyone who attended was given a complimentary drink of their choice and the lady members received a gift of a tote-bag with their name printed on it, and the gentlemen members were given a tie clip and cufflinks with the BCPA logo.

There was a disco, presented by Mark Farrell, who is the son-in-law of one of our members, Irene Cavanagh. He did a really good job and played the right kind of music for us to dance to. He was joined for part of the evening by Joe Turner who led the line dancing section. Joe is our regular line dance teacher. We thank Mark and Joe for the music and entertainment.

We were very pleased to see Janet and Keith Jackson as well as Chris and Tony Ward who travelled from Nottingham and Cambridge, and Councillors Joan and Alan Lowe, who are good friends of Halton Zipper Club. We also welcomed the staff of Grangeway Leisure Centre who look after us each Thursday when we have our meetings.

During the evening Keith Jackson gave a short speech congratulating the club on it’s twenty years of successful existence. There was a presentation of flowers to Janet and Keith and also to Beryl McCann, who, along with her husband Derek, founded the club in 1994. Beryl is still a very active member of the committee and arranges all our outings.

An excellent buffet was served by the staff of the War Memorial Club, which everyone enjoyed especially the large cake decorated with the BCPA logo. The rest of the evening was spent dancing and socialising. It was a really good party, a huge success, enjoyed by everyone who attended. On behalf of the members I would like to thank Margaret Rimmer, Derek Davidson, all the rest of the committee, Joe Turner, Mark Farrell, the staff at the War Memorial Club, Devonshire Bakery and all who helped to make it such a memorable evening.

The next event we have to look forward to is our usual trip to Oswaldtwistle Mill for our pre-Christmas lunch and sing-a-long. Also, some of us are going on Turkey and Tinsel breaks, some to Tenby and some to Llandudno. We also have another Christmas meal and entertainment booked for 2nd December at Evenwood Farm Restaurant.

We meet every Thursday at Grangeway for Gentle Exercise, Line Dancing, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Games.
